My Prayer Book Collection

Anglican Prayer Books

Updated: 16 Jun 25

Over the years, I’ve amassed a collection of Anglican prayer books. I use them for reference, comparative purposes, and draw inspiration or prayers from different prayer books as appropriate (i.e. the Canadian BCP doesn’t have a prayer for times of plague and pestilence, but the 1662 BCP does (the revisers of the Canadian BCP must have thought that plagues were a thing of the past by the mid-20th century).

It is my intention that should I visit different churches of the Anglican Communion, I will acquire the local prayer book for my collection.

I may have multiple copies or different formats (i.e. large print version) of a particular prayer book, which I will not elaborate in the list below.

  1. What is your take on the St. Augustine’s Prayer Book? I got a copy of it around 9 years ago from the old Episcopal Bookstore in Seattle (since closed) and absolutely love it. I like its compact size and when I go away on vacation, it comes along with me. When my father was dying last year and we had no access to a priest in his care home, I used it (along with his old military prayer book from the UK) to give him some sort of last rites for him.

    1. It’s quite good, but it hasn’t replaced the BCP for me. I travel with my BCP Canada 1962, it’s not too bulky, but it’s not as compact as St. Augustine’s Prayer Book. Plus, I have the BCP on my phone (and I have the Common Prayer App), so technically I don’t really need to bring my BCP with me when I travel.

      1. I’m not a digital guy and don’t use any mobile technology. So everything I read and use for religious studies is done in book format. So much so that I feel digital church services and digital church media are invalid and “don’t count”.

So when I travel on the road, I usually take along St. Augustine’s Prayer Book and sometimes a small booklet about the Jesus Prayer written by Kallistos (Timothy) Ware. Whenever I stay at a hotel or motel, I still go looking for the Gideon Bible (seen less and less these days), sometimes I leave notes in them for the next reader wishing them with a good day and hoping something nice happens to them.
