Solemn Evening Prayer for the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels, commonly called Michaelmas

Solemn Evening Prayer for Michaelmas

Office Setting: Evening Service In G+, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford

Psalm: Choir of Wells Cathedral

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race which is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.

Psalm: 91

1st Lesson: Daniel 10. 4-end

2nd Lesson: Revelations 5

Collect of the Day: O Everlasting God, who hast ordained and constituted the services of Angels and men in a wonderful order: Mercifully grant that, as thy holy Angels alway do thee service in heaven, so by thy appointment they may succour and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Heavenly Father, who in thy Son Jesus Christ hast given us a true faith and a sure hope: Help us, we pray thee, to live as those who believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to life everlasting; and strengthen this faith and hope in us all the days of our life; through the love of thy Son Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Evening Prayer for the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 16) and the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in COVIDtide

Evening Prayer, Trinity 16

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Psalm: 91

1st Lesson: Nehemiah 2

2nd Lesson: 1 Corinthians 13

Collect of the Day: O Lord, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Eternal Lord, judge of all thy servants; tonight we pray for quiet and peace that the world cannot give. We pray for forgiveness and love. We pray for all those in grief, sickness, pain, loneliness, and anxiety. We pray for all those who work to protect us from the dangers of this earth, whether they be serving in the Queenโ€™s forces, healthcare workers, or others in hazardous occupations. Tonight, we also pray for the people of the Jewish faith on their holy day of Yom Kippur, may they have an easy fast and they be sealed for good in the Book of Life. Let thy holy angels dwell herein this night to preserve us in peace while we sleep; and may thy blessing be upon us evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Solemn Morning Prayer for the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 16) and the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in COVIDtide

Trinity 16

I wasnโ€™t feeling very well and needed incense and music.

Office setting: The Great Service, William Byrd

Psalms sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Psalm: 90

1st Lesson: Ezekiel 18. 1-4, 19-end

2nd Lesson: Luke 9. 46-end

Collect of the Day: O Lord, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, maker of heaven and earth; we pray for peace in the world that remains elusive; that we not be divided by differences, but unite under our similarities. We pray for all those in grief, sickness, pain, loneliness, and anxiety; especially those in pain of the heart. We pray for continued prudence and vigilance of all peoples as this Coronavirus plague makes a resurgence. Protect all those who labour at tasks of danger and difficulty, that they may be preserved in safety and health, especially all health workers and those in service industries; and grant that, knowing the dangers which beset them, they may ever take thought one for another, and be sustained by a sure trust in thee. We give thanks for a new chapter that will soon begin in my life, for all those who supported and guided me to this phase, and all those who will help me through the undoubtedly challenging times and find success at the end; all this we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Feast of Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist

Today is the feast day of Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist.

Saint Matthew

Saint Matthew is probably most well known for writing one of the synoptic Gospels. Prior to becoming a disciple of Jesus, he was a publican (tax collector), and was thus despised by the local populace (because no one likes the tax man). Jesus invited him over for supper and sat with him, much to the chagrin of the Pharisees (conservative Jews).

I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Collect of the Day: Almighty God, who by thy blessed Son didst call Matthew from the receipt of custom to be an Apostle and Evangelist: Grant us grace to forsake all covetous desires and inordinate love of riches, and to follow the same thy Son Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Awkward Church Funnies

This is just a collection of things that have happened at church that I found amusing and sometimes cringeworthy. It was probably rather awkward/embarrassing for the priest/parish staff at the time, but one can’t take religion too seriously. This might not happen at all churches/denominations.

Wrong readings: It is always awkward when the assigned reader doesn’t read the expected passage, whether they are on the wrong week, the Bible is turned to the wrong page, or the reader forgets when they’re supposed to stop and keep reading until the end of the chapter. I’ve seen priests notice and stop the reader, and I’ve been priests show concern, but just let the train wreck continue.

Impossible to pronounce Jewish names: There are quite a few names in the Old Testament that are difficult to pronounce (like Mahershalalhashbaz, Chushanrishathaim, or Mephibosheth). Some people practice or research the names ahead of time to avoid embarassment, and sometimes people try to wing it and they just come out very wrong or sounding nothing like the name.

Wrong hymns: Sometimes the churchwardens forget to update the hymn board from the previous week, put up the wrong hymn number, or there’s a discrepancy between the hymn board and what is listed in the bulletin. Often the mistake is not discovered until the music starts playing and the congregation looks at each other trying to confirm if the have flipped to the right page in the hymnal.

Overconsececration: For a variety of reasons, extra wafers may be consecrated, but because Anglicans don’t typically reserve the sacarament, all of it must be consumed. Normally the Master of Ceremonies does a quick count to ensure there are sufficient hosts but sometimes it goes horrible wrong and there are way too many left over. It is amusing/awkward to watch the priest/deacons “reverently consume” a large number of dry wafers before carrying on with the rest of the worship service.

Priest going rogue: Sometimes the priest doesn’t follow the published liturgy and decides to improvise. I’ve seen a priest decide that the congregation would recite the Apostles’ Creed rather than the Nicene Creed as laid out in the bulletin.

Laity going rogue: Sometimes laymen are given the opportunity to say prayers in front of the congregation, and that could end up going horribly. They say awkward prayers or they just drag the prayer on and on.

Too much incense: I normally wouldnโ€™t say that one can use too much incense, but if it sets of the smoke detector and the fire department arrives, or the gospel reader is having a coughing fit and canโ€™t finish the reading, I would say thatโ€™s probably too much incense.

Said Communion for the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 15) / Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Pentecost 16) and the Twenty-Eight Sunday in COVIDtide

All Saints Cathedral reopened for the first time since it closed due to COVID-19

The Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, reopened for the first time after closing due to COVID-19. One had to register and reserve a seat online in order to attend. Although regulations permitted 50 to attend, there was only about 14 in attendance. Masks has to be worn at all times (except to consume communion (in one kind)) and there was no singing. The wooden chairs with kneelers were replaced with plastic chairs to facilitate cleaning.

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

BCP Collect of the Day: Keep, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Church with thy perpetual mercy; and, because the frailty of man without thee cannot but fall, keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

RCL Collect: O God from your providing hand even the dissatisfied and grumbling receive what they need for their lives. Teach us your ways of justice and lead us to practice your generosity, so that we may live a life worthy of the gospel made known through your Son Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

On Evangelism

One of the missions of a disciple of Christ is evangelism, or the spreading of the message of Christ to others. As my faith is deeply personal, I do not actively proselyze (as in hand out Bibles, try to actively convert someone to Christianity, or tell them they are going to Hell for not accepting Christ). Having grown up in a very evangelical Methodist family, I do not force religion on others, as I’ve experienced those pressures before and I find it doesn’t necessariliy achieve the goal. But at the same time, I expect others to respect my faith, and I will defend my faith and Christ is needed.

I spread the word of Christ indirectly; through my actions and example in the hope that others will come to the world of Christ, either through curiosity or admiration of my commitment to faith. Some have been intrigued enough to ask to come to church with me and I will never decline such a request, though I tend to be somewhat hesitant, as church me is very private and “in my own little world,” as it is my time with God.

One other things that I call my evangelism is showing the world the beauty of Christ through the churches built by his followers through the photos I take of churches that I visit or attend.

Through my social media and discussions, many of my friends have learned about Christianity that they may not have previously known, such as feast days and the liturgical calendar (like how the 12 days of Christmas doesn’t being until 25 December and that the Advent season is not the Christmas season). I am open to discuss religion and the church with my friends where we talk about different aspects of it such as basic theology, differences in denominations, interpretations, or random idiosyncracies. The key is that one must be able to approach religion with a sense of humour (as it is well known to my friends, I call communion, “getting the cookie and grape juice”). As G.K. Chesterston said, โ€œit is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it.โ€

I do hope that more people are able to find God and peace through faith, and I cannot “save all the souls,” but maybe I can bring a couple along with me.

Morning Prayer for the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 14) and the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in COVIDtide

Morning Prayer for Trinity 14

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Psalm: 78 Part I

1st Lesson: Jeremiah 31. 27-34

2nd Lesson: Luke 6. 39-end

Collect of the Day: Almighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Alrighty God, the giver of all good gifts: Grant thy blessing, we humbly beseech thee, to the new bishop of Nova Scotia and PEI, Sandra Fyfe; and we give thanks to all clergy and laity that assembled in her election. May the new bishop serve these as a chief Pastor and minister thy to the glory of thy Name, to good government of the flock committed to her charge, and the welfare of thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sung Communion for the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 13) / Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Pentecost 14) and the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in COVIDtide

St Johnโ€™s Church, St. Eleanor (Summerside), PEI

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Since I was in PEI again, I was able to attend said communion, this time at St Johnโ€™s Church in St. Eleanor (Summerside), PEI. It was a combined service of St. Maryโ€™s and St. Johnโ€™s as they held their Annual Memorial Flower Service. (And apparently Stir-Up Sunday as well (time to start the Christmas puddings).)

All the pews were filled (since it was a combined service) and it was a sung communion but the congregation did not sing, just the guitarist who sang while he played.

BAS Collect of the Day: Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people, that richly bearing the fruit of good works, we may by you be richly rewarded;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

BCP Collect of the Day: Almighty and merciful God, of whose only gift it cometh that thy faithful people do unto thee true and laudable service: Grant, we beseech thee, that we may so faithfully serve thee in this life, that we fail not finally on to attain thy heavenly promises; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
