Sung Eucharist for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity (and the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in COVIDtide)

St. Peterโ€™s Cathedral, Charlottetown

Collect: Almighty and everlasting God, who art aalways more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy; forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

On 30 August 2020, I was blessed to have been able to attend Holy Communion at St. Peterโ€™s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. This was the first time since the Second Sunday in Lent (8 March 2020) (which was I decided was the start of COVIDtide) that I had attended a church service as most Anglican churches in Nova Scotia remain closed until September. This was my second time worshipping at St. Peterโ€™s as I had worshipped there previously in 2018.

I was very glad to have been able to worship and receive communion (even though it was in one kind only due to COVID-19 precautions), especially in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Attendance was low and the choir was just four people, but understandable with the ongoing concerns about COVID-19 especially with elderly parishioners. I was very glad that incense was used, but the mask made it hard to smell it.

It was the second sung Eucharist at St Peterโ€™s since the public was permitted to attend church again (previous Eucharists were just said). (Because of the low cases of COVID-19 in PEI, St Peterโ€™s resumed public worship services on 7 June.) Masks had to be worn for singing, though masks are not required for the remainder of the service when two metre spacing could be observed.

For those not familiar with St. Peterโ€™s Cathedral, it is actually a co-cathedral, as the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island has two cathedrals (as it covers two civil provinces), the other bring All Saints Cathedral in Halifax, NS. St. Peterโ€™s has always been of the Anglo-Catholic tradition; which is odd, as cathedrals usually tend to be broad church, but because All Saints is broad church, I think this is why St. Peterโ€™s has been able to remain so high.

Solemn Morning Prayer for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 11) and the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in COVIDtide

Trinity 11

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Today I felt that I needed to burn some incense at Morning Prayer. Thanks to Peterborough Cathedral and Westminster Abbey for providing the music.

Collect of the Day: O God, who declarest thy almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalms: 65, 67

1st Lesson: Jeremiah 18. 1-17

2nd Lesson: Luke 4. 1-15

The Feast is the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dormition of the Theotokos

Today is the Feast of the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or the Dormition of the Theotokos (Greek: Mother of God)) (or the Assumption of the BVM for the Roman Catholics) (theologically, Dormition and Assumption are
different, but I will not get into it here) or as I like to call it โ€œSleepy Mary Dayโ€ ๐Ÿ›Œ๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿฝ.

Collect: O God Most High, who didst endue with wonderful virtue and grace the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Lord: Grant that we, who now call her blessed, may be made very members of the heavenly family of him who was pleased to be called the first-born among many brethren; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Magnificat (Song of Mary):
My soul doth magnify the Lord, / and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded / the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth / all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me; / and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him / throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; / he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, / and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; / and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy / hath holpen his servant Israel;
As he promised to our forefathers, / Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, / world without end. Amen.

The Angelus:
V. The Angel of the Lord announced unto Mary,
R. And she conceived by the Holy Ghost.

V. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
R. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord;
R. Be it unto me according to thy word.

V. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
R. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

V. And the Word was made flesh,
R. And dwelt among us.

V. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
R. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by His Cross and Passion we may be brought unto the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Morning Prayer for the Ninth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 9) and the Twenty-Second Sunday in COVIDtide

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Collect of the Day: Grant to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as be rightful; that we, who cannot do any thing that is good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

And since I am going fishing today:

They that go down to the sea in ships, / and occupy their business on the great waters;

These men see the works of the Lord, / and his wonders in the deep.

O Almighty God, who hast made the sea, and all that move therein: Bestow thy blessing on the harvest of the waters, that it may be abundant in its season, and on our sailors and fishermen, that they may be safe in every peril of the deep; so that we all with thankful hearts may acknowledge thee, who art Lord of the sea and of the dry land; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Also how appropriate that todayโ€™s second lesson is Acts 27 (Paulโ€™s voyage to Rome by sea)

Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

Transfiguration by Raphael, circa 1520

Today is the feast day of the Transfiguration of Our Lord.

The Transfiguration of Christ is when Jesus becomes transfigured (experiences a moment of divine radiance), the voice of God identifies Jesus as his beloved son, his disciples fell to the ground afraid of what they saw/heard, and Jesus tells them not to be afraid.

Collect of the Day: O God, who on the holy mount didst reveal to chosen witnesses thy well-beloved Son wonderfully transfigured: Mercifully grant-unto us such a vision of his divine majesty, that we, being purified and strengthened by thy grace, may be transformed into his likeness from glory to glory; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Morning Prayer for the Eighth Sunday after Trinity (Trinity 8) and the Twenty-First Sunday in COVIDtide

Trinity 8

I have returned to my primary chapel. Thanks be to God.

God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him.

Collect of the Day: O God, whose never-failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and earth: We humbly beseech thee to put away from us all hurtful things, and to give us those things which be profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
